KEY ACTION
The Holland City Council voted to give itself a raise.
DISCUSSION
After an April 24 meeting, the city?s compensation committee voted to recommend a 2.4 percent raise in the annual salary and meeting per diem of the mayor and city council members.
The mayor will now earn an annual salary of $8,755 and a meeting per diem of $55.30, not to exceed a total compensation of $13,000. Each city council member will now earn an annual salary of $2,857 and the same meeting per diem for a total compensation not to exceed $6,500.
The city council did approve a pay cut two years ago at the height of the recession.
Despite that, Mayor Kurt Dykstra, councilmen Myron Trethewey, Brian Burch and Wayne Klomparens and Councilwoman Nancy DeBoer voted against it. Because six votes were needed to reject the recommendation, it only took four votes in favor to pass it.
?I don?t do it for the money,? Trethewey said. ?I don?t believe in my years in council I?ve ever voted in favor of a raise.?
OTHER ACTION
? The council approved Elzinga and Volkers as the general contractor to oversee the repair of Windmill De Zwaan. The city has received more than $75,000 in donations as of Wednesday, City Manager Ryan Cotton said. The project is expected to cost roughly $700,00. While the money isn?t in the bank, $25,000 is available from the Legacy Fund, $200,000 has been pledged from a Challenge Grant and $375,000 from another source, unnamed, has been promised. With $88,000 from the general fund used to get the project started, the total raised comes to $760,000.
However, the total fundraising goal for the island is $2.1 million to complete several projects at the park. Dykstra said he hopes everything is done by next year so a grand 50-year anniversary celebration can be thrown.
?If you?re thinking about donating, now is the time,? Klomparens said.
